The sands of Cape Hatteras hide many old secrets, like the Lost Colony, shipwrecks and ancient forests. In reality, this is the severed foundation of the first house built on the oceanfront at Mirlo Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">As I recall, it was constructed around 1985 and was named\u00a0<em>East Wind Station<\/em>. There was a healthy dune in place, and life was good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/19911.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2046\" title=\"1991'\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/19911.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/19911.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/19911-400x262.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It was renamed <em>Toes in the Sand<\/em> when it was sold recently to a new owner. My 1991 aerial photograph shows\u00a0<em>East Wind Station<\/em> sitting behind a lush dune. It&#8217;s the house with the brown roof, just left of center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/toes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2034\" title=\"toes\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/toes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/toes.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/toes-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Today, life is not so good at Mirlo Beach. Property continues to wash away, and\u00a0<em>Toes in the Sand<\/em> is being prepared to be pulled to a location that is a little more secure. It&#8217;s fate\u00a0rests on steel I-beams with wheels, on the side of highway 12 .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/hwy-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2036\" title=\"hwy 12\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/hwy-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/hwy-12.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/hwy-12-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">In the meantime, stormy seas sweep over the beach with regularity. The road is often impassable at times of high water.
