There\u2019s a lot of nature on my piece of the island, and I like it that way. Birds fly in to roost or feed in the trees. During migration you never know what will arrive.<\/p>\n<p>About two weeks ago, there was a thump on the window, and I knew an unfortunate bird had flown into the reflection of deceiving glass. It\u2019s a common problem.<\/p>\n<p>I always want\u00a0to help revive the victim unless the collision is fatal. Most of the time the birds are stunned and after a short respite, they\u2019re able to fly off. This time I was blown away when the accident involved a male indigo bunting.<\/p>\n<p>Preferring more inland habitat, they are rare in our seaside village, but not unheard of.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/swirl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2595\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/swirl.jpg\" alt=\"swirl\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/swirl.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/swirl-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0The bunting was dazed and I set up a 105 micro nikkor for a few close ups.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/beak.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2596\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/beak.jpg\" alt=\"beak\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/beak.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/beak-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Interestingly, I&#8217;ve read their plumage is really black, but because of the way the feathers are structured, they reflect as a brilliant blue in sunlight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bunting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2597\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bunting.jpg\" alt=\"bunting\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bunting.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bunting-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Before long he came to and flew away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lately I find myself shooting close to home.
