The first few years after I moved here, I don\u2019t think it ever went below freezing. I learned that the water surrounding the island acts as a heat sink and tends to keep temperatures more moderate, compared to those to the north and inland.<\/p>\n<p>This year has not been one of those winters. The cold fronts have been colder, stormier and more frequent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/north-pier.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2878\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/north-pier.jpg\" alt=\"north pier\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/north-pier.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/north-pier-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>A series of storms took its toll on the Rodanthe Pier. Last week I could see that the end of the pier would soon collapse into the sea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/viewers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2879\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/viewers.jpg\" alt=\"viewers\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/viewers.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/viewers-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>An hour after I made this shot, the pier became 75 feet shorter. The next day, the owners retrieved some of the timbers washed in on the beach and are resolved to rebuild it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/marsh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2880\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/marsh.jpg\" alt=\"marsh\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/marsh.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/marsh-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>In the meantime, temperatures have plummeted and the Pamlico Sound froze overnight. The ice sculpted on the shoreline was a sight to behold.
