It was meaningful for me in that my family has had roots in LA for generations. My dad was one of 3 sons born to Polish immigrants that settled in South Pasadena about 1920. My mother\u2019s family goes back much further with lineage going back several generations with American-Mexican roots. I was born in Pasadena and remember riding in an old Ford, driving by lots of oil wells and orange groves. There was traffic on the freeways then, but nothing like it is today. I was nonetheless, excited to go back. It had been nearly 30 years since my last visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/buildings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3316\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/buildings.jpg\" alt=\"buildings\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/buildings.jpg 450w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/buildings-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Spellbound by the urban environment, my first shot was taken in Studio City.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Annenberg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3362\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Annenberg.jpg\" alt=\"Annenberg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Annenberg.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Annenberg-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Nearby,\u00a0<em>The Annenberg Space for Photography<\/em> was showing a major exhibit by Franz Lanting, one of my favorite photographers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/observatory.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3317\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/observatory.jpg\" alt=\"observatory\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/observatory.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/observatory-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>With\u00a0so much to see, we took in a few attractions, beginning with the Griffith Observatory. Hiking trails are all around the property.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/big-picture3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3346\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/big-picture3.jpg\" alt=\"big picture\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Einstein3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3347\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Einstein3.jpg\" alt=\"Einstein\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The exhibits inside were stunning, interactive and free. It still has a small town feeling, much like when I was little.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/square-deal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3358\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/square-deal.jpg\" alt=\"square deal\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/square-deal.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/square-deal-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>My grandfather William, opened the <em>Square Deal Barbershop<\/em> on Mission Street in 1924. He worked there the rest of his life, passing it on to his son, my Uncle Eddie. Likewise, Eddie continued to cut hair the rest of his career, leaving it to his son John, who now leases it to another barber. The old photograph of Eddie and grandpa was likely taken in the forties.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3324\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/barbershop.jpg\" alt=\"barbershop\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/barbershop.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/barbershop-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Today the barbershop is called <em>Reedy&#8217;s,\u00a0<\/em>and still has a clean, welcoming appearance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reedys.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3326\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reedys.jpg\" alt=\"Reedy's\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reedys.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reedys-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Inside we met barber Steve Reedy with Frank Reader, a regular customer and talented lead singer for the popular Scottish band, <em>Trashcan Sinatras<\/em>. \u00a0It was wonderful to see Steve carry on the tradition of cutting hair in that very same spot. And to think grandpa gave me my first haircut right there.
