Crowds thin and weather conditions become more tropical. There are so many pluses, then tropical influences can develop into hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/radar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3911\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/radar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/radar.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/radar-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always relished waves spawned from a distance. Sitting well offshore last week <strong><em>Jose<\/em><\/strong> generated some of the best surf in years. For a few of those days however, seas washed over the highway in spots and even shut it down for a tide cycle. I went to Rodanthe to investigate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/staging.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3912\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/staging.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/staging.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/staging-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>During road closures, north Rodanthe becomes a staging area for exiting traffic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/america-st..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3913\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/america-st..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/america-st..jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/america-st.-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Sea water flows in from the beach and because of it&#8217;s salinity is highly corrosive for automobiles splashing through.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cottage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3914\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cottage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cottage.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cottage-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>At the end of <strong><em>Surfside Drive<\/em><\/strong> sits another imperiled cottage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/corbina.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3915\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/corbina.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/corbina.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/corbina-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>In 1980 this beach house was 4 lots back from the oceanfront. Homeowners there are certainly in a real estate bind, and with another storm named <strong><em>Maria<\/em><\/strong> coming, things are likely to get much worse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/swing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3920\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/swing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/swing.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/swing-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>I couldn&#8217;t resist a self portrait opportunity and wondered if this porch swing would still be intact next week, after Maria sweeps by the Outer Banks.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricanes are a fact of life here and although we tend to compare some storms to others, they are unique unto themselves. An evacuation had been ordered and the following day we experienced gusts near a hundred with the eye going by about 25 miles offshore.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<em><strong>Hurricane Maria, <\/strong><\/em>about 300 miles to the southeast, we&#8217;re under an evacuation order.<em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Tropical storm and storm surge warnings are up.
