As pets, dogs are cherished and devoted to their owners. Years ago when I became associated with locals that fished commercially, I noticed a number of them taking dogs out on the water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Belton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4415\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Belton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Belton.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Belton-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The harbor at <strong><em>Rodanthe<\/em><\/strong> was a pretty busy place back then. There were gill-netters, crabbers and long haulers working out of that spot, better known locally as <strong><em>The Creek<\/em><\/strong>. In the Summer of 1980, brothers <em><strong>Collins and Belton Gray<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0ran their long haul rig out of Rodanthe. In this photo <em><strong>Belton, Sr<\/strong><\/em> and son <em><strong>Belton, Jr<\/strong><\/em> contemplate after packing out their day&#8217;s catch. I don&#8217;t recall the name of their black lab standing on the bow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Dale.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4416\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Dale.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Dale.jpg 350w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Dale-246x400.jpg 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dale Midgett<\/strong><\/em> ran the fish house and packed out the daily catches for Jimmy Austin Seafood Company with his loyal companion, <strong><em>Titus<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another fishing friend of mine was <strong><em>Roger Woolyhan<\/em><\/strong>. He worked out of <strong><em>The Creek<\/em><\/strong> and had just begun a career in commercial fishing after moving here from Delaware in the 70&#8217;s. He bought an old wooden skiff and learned to hang his nets. I went fishing with him a number of times and got one of my favorite shots in Spring of 1977.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Moose.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4418\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Moose.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Moose.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Moose-400x245.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>His female black lab was named <strong><em>Moose<\/em><\/strong>. She went everywhere with him fishing, surfing or shopping. It made no difference to her, as long as she was close.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Brian.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4419\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Brian.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Brian.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Brian-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By 1987 after I had finished building my home in Waves, a regular visitor was a young boy named <em><strong>Brian Midgett<\/strong><\/em>. He and his extended family lived on property adjacent to mine, and still do. My Chesapeake Bay Retriver named <strong><em>Boca<\/em><\/strong> loved Brian and they frequently played in the creek behind his grandparents&#8217; place. Boca always wanted to be in the water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Boca.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4425\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Boca.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Boca.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Boca-400x263.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Boca<\/em><\/strong> was a big, beautiful <em>Chessie<\/em> and I took him whenever I foraged the sound for oysters. When he found a terrapin trapped in this abandoned crab pot, we released the poor struggling critter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/salvo-creek.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4420\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/salvo-creek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/salvo-creek.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/salvo-creek-400x248.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another creek in Salvo belonged to <em><strong>Burgess Hooper<\/strong><\/em>. He was born, raised and fished there all his life. With his wife <em><strong>Zanovah<\/strong><\/em>, they owned property and rental units. I used to help him on maintenance and building projects. We were pretty close and he loved his canine companion, <strong><em>Princess<\/em><\/strong>. She fished with him every time he went out on the Pamlico Sound.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Burgess.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4421\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Burgess.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Burgess.jpg 350w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Burgess-269x400.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Burgess was an\u00a0<em>old school\u00a0<\/em><em>Hatterasman<\/em>\u00a0and still fished with traditional cotton nets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4422\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Princess<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0anticipating catches from the bow, had sea legs.
