August 16, 1918 during World War l, the British tanker <strong><em>Mirlo<\/em><\/strong> exploded offshore after being targeted by a German U-boat. The crew at <strong><em>Chicamacomico Coast Guard Station<\/em><\/strong> launched their 25-foot surfboat offshore to where the <strong><em>Mirlo<\/em><\/strong>, loaded with fuel, was an inferno. Despite the danger, <em>Keeper<\/em> <em>John Allen Midgett<\/em> <em>and 5 Surfmen<\/em> maneuvered among the flames. Miraculously, they rescued 42 out of a crew of 51 and brought them to shore.<\/p>\n<p>As a result,<em> Captain John Allen Midgett, Zion Midgett, Arthur Midgett, Prochorus O\u2019Neal, Clarence Midgett, and Leroy Midgett<\/em> received highly prestigious awards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6242\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0002.jpg 367w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0002-245x400.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All six men were decorated with United States Gold Lifesaving Medals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6243\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0007.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0007.jpg 370w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0007-247x400.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1921, King George V of Great Britain bestowed specially minted Gold Lifesaving Medals to each of them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6244\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0004.jpg 362w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0004-241x400.jpg 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>July of 1930 the same lifesavers were awarded the American Cross of Honor. At the time only 11 had ever been given. Six of them belong to those men at Chicamacomico.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0001-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6259\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0001-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0001-2.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mirlo0001-2-400x253.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Captain John Allen Midgett<\/em> was also presented a silver cup by the British Board of Trade.<\/p>\n<p>As a past board member and president of Chicamacomico Historical Association, I kept personal photographic records of events at the station over many years.
