Many are all but forgotten and bring back memories, like images I took when working out of Tilghman Island, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Narrows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6382\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Narrows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Narrows.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Narrows-400x253.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While crewing aboard the dredging\u00a0<em><strong>Virginia W<\/strong><\/em>, there were times when large portions of Chesapeake Bay froze, leaving the fleet of sailing skipjacks tied up at the dock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Tonging-boats.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6384\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Tonging-boats.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Tonging-boats.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Tonging-boats-400x244.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hand tongers however could reach areas still free of ice to get their harvest. Less efficient in catching oysters, it&#8217;s environmentally more friendly to benthic marine life on the bottom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/tonging-boat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6385\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/tonging-boat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/tonging-boat.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/tonging-boat-400x280.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The shafts on hand tongs can reach lengths of 20 feet or more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/culling.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6386\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/culling.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/culling.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/culling-400x249.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tongers load the culling board while another crew member saves the good oysters and dumps the detritus overboard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/patent-tonger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6383\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/patent-tonger.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/patent-tonger.jpg 374w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/patent-tonger-249x400.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A more efficient way to use tongs is hydraulically. Called patent tongs, they&#8217;re much larger and mechanically harvest more than hand tongs. At the same time, this method can be more destructive to organisms on the bottom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deadrise.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6387\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deadrise.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deadrise.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/deadrise-400x247.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Working with hand tongs is brutally physical. Imagine the workout you&#8217;d have at the end of a day. These watermen worked from a classic Chesapeake Bay dead-rise boat,\u00a0<strong><em>Mina Conway<\/em><\/strong>.
