Things were a bit different back then. Hatteras had yet to be discovered by the masses and many locals made livelihoods from the sea. I was particularly taken by the commercial fishing industry. On the sound side of all seven villages, there were small working waterfronts where individuals could dock their boats and bring in their catch. Today those waterfronts are all but gone.<\/p>\n<p>The village of Avon originally known as <em><strong>Kinnekeet<\/strong><\/em> had one of those waterfronts. That\u2019s where generations of native <em><strong>Kinnekeeters<\/strong><\/em> had lived, and worked on the water. I saw this place as a hidden gem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Edwin-jr-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6719\" src=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Edwin-jr-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Edwin-jr-copy.jpg 600w, http:\/\/photoblog.michaelhalminski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Edwin-jr-copy-400x243.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While wandering the Avon Harbor in 1977, I photographed an old wooden workboat that lay derelict in the marsh. It must have been about 40 feet long and beautiful. The <em><strong>Edwin Jr.<\/strong> <\/em>had seen better days.
